Is Camel Meat Safe for Pets?

Camel meat is considered a highly digestible novel protein with a very low incidence of allergies in dogs and cats. Both camel muscle and heart are highly digestible and contain a balanced amino acid profile suitable for sensitive pets. Freeze-drying preserves nutrients without adding preservatives, and strict heat treatment ensures microbiological safety.

Camel Sourcing:

All of our camels are sourced from a reputable, large-scale camel farming operation in the Harrisville region of Queensland — recognised as one of Australia’s largest and most well-managed camel dairies and training centres.

Most of these camels are home-grown at the Harrisville farm, raised under controlled grazing conditions. If they aren't, they come from agistment blocks in the Winton region. After arriving at the Harrisville farm, these camels spend more than 12 weeks grazing on-site before being sent for processing, ensuring a safe transition and minimising any risk from naturally occurring compounds. Recently, some camels have also come from a regulated camel dairy in Victoria.
All camels are sent to licensed external meat processing facilities, where they are handled by licensed butchers and inspected by qualified meat inspectors. Only muscle and heart are used — liver and kidney, where indospicine tends to accumulate, are excluded — ensuring the meat is safe and highly digestible for pets.

What Are Agistment Blocks:

Agistment blocks are managed grazing properties where animals are kept temporarily under a formal or informal agistment agreement. The landholder provides pasture, water, and basic oversight, while the primary owner retains full responsibility for animal identification, welfare, and movement records.
This type of arrangement is commonly recognised within Australia’s regulated livestock systems, including the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS), state biosecurity legislation such as the Biosecurity Act 2014 (QLD), and state Department of Primary Industries (DPI) agistment guidelines.

Indospicine & Botanical Risk Management:
Indospicine is a naturally occurring, heat-stable compound found in certain Indigofera plants. These plants are reported to be mainly in Northern Queensland and the Northern Territory (Northern Territory Government, 2025; Queensland Native Seeds, 2025), where environmental conditions favour their growth.

Winton, in contrast, is located in Central West Queensland, an inland semi-arid region with different climate and vegetation compared to Northern Queensland (Bureau of Meteorology, 2025). While Indigofera may occur in inland areas, the likelihood is significantly lower than in high-risk northern regions (Northern Territory Government, 2025; Queensland Native Seeds, 2025).

Additionally, the Harrisville camel farm has confirmed the following:
> “We have spoken to our vet and we believe that the area these camels are coming from is free from the plant that causes it.”

Integrated Safety Guidance for Camel Treats:
Safe Feeding Guidance

Each bag contains 50 g of freeze-dried camel treats. Introduce the treats gradually and monitor your pet’s response, as is recommended with any novel protein. Feed in small amounts appropriate for your pet’s size and activity level.

Purchase Limit: One bag per camel treat product per order (e.g., one bag camel meat + one bag camel heart).

Legal Disclaimer – Pet Treat:

This product is intended as a complementary pet treat only and is not a substitute for veterinary care or a complete diet. Individual pets may respond differently to new proteins; observe your pet for any adverse reactions when introducing new treats. While most dogs and cats can safely consume camel meat in small quantities, introduce gradually and monitor your pet’s response.

Feed responsibly according to your pet’s size, age, and activity level. Store in a cool, dry place and keep out of reach of children. Ingredients are sourced from reputable farms and processed under licensed facilities.

The manufacturer and seller are not responsible for misuse, overfeeding, or feeding to animals with specific medical conditions without veterinary consultation.

Halal Certification
All camel meat used in our treats is processed through Halal-certified facilities. (The Halal certification applies to camel meat only; camel heart is not included.) All products are handled in accordance with Australian food-safety and traceability requirements, ensuring consistent quality and ethical processing standards.
Freeze-Drying & Production Standards
Our camel treats are produced in a Safe Food Queensland–certified facility, following regulated hygiene and traceability requirements. The final stage of freeze-drying includes heating to 65 °C for at least 10 minutes, meeting microbial safety standards for pet treats. Each batch is tested for Salmonella at an accredited external laboratory. Treats are packaged in small 50 g units, supporting freshness and convenient portioning.
